History Students Discuss ‘The Underdogs’

Earleir today, Latin American History students discussed Mariano Azeuela’s classic novel, The Underdogs, about the Mexican Revolution. To kick things off, students responded to the following prompt…

The foreword to this book begins with the quotation, “Revolutions begin fighting tyranny and end fighting themselves.” Discuss what the various characters in the story believed themselves to be fighting for and against. Are they united in their intentions and understanding of what they are doing? Why or why not? Do their intentions and understanding of what they are fighting for and against change in the course of the story?

Next, students will learn about Latin America and neocolonialism.
