Justin Sellar: New Assistant Athletic Director
After Athletic Director Tom Nelson abruptly took over his current position last September, his department was left without a full-time Assistant Athletic Director.
This fall, the community welcomes Justin Sellar into that role, who has six years of experience as Associate Director of Athletics and Varsity Baseball Coach at St. George’s School in Middletown, Rhode Island.
How has your transition been from St. George’s to here?
It’s been very good so far. There’s been a lot of people at Brimmer that have helped with the transition. It’s a very supportive place, and I feel comfortable here so far. Brimmer, I think, has a lot of potential, and it’s an exciting time to be here. I was excited to meet with the Upper School athletes at the fall athletics meeting this past Friday, and I’m looking forward to getting to know the Middle School athletes and Lower School athletes as well, as well as all the other students. It’s been good.
What goals have you set as the new Assistant Athletic Director?
My main goal is to maximize the student-athletic experience. I think it’s something I take a lot of pride in, and ultimately, my goal is for the students—win or lose—to enjoy their time as an athlete at Brimmer.
You served as the Varsity Baseball Coach at St. George’s. Do you have any plans to coach here?
At this point, I’m not sure. I don’t think so. Obviously, if there’s a need, I would be happy to, but I am very focused on my role as Assistant Athletic Director right now, but would be willing to help however I can.
How has your time at St. George’s prepared you for this role here?
I was fortunate to learn a lot from a few different people in my time at St. George’s. We had three different athletic directors while I was there, and I learned something from all of them. I think the biggest thing with me in this new role is I feel comfortable with what I have known, and I’m also willing to take ideas from Mr. Nelson and others that have been at Brimmer longer. I also feel like I’m hopeful that I can maybe offer some new things as well.
When I first joined St. George’s, I was very unsure of what exactly I was getting into. It was my first time with a job in athletic administration at a school, and I was very young. I was actually probably pretty close in age to some of the students, which was interesting. Whereas here at Brimmer, I feel a lot more comfortable in my role. I have experience, and I feel like I’ve grown a lot as a person in my role and in my job. This transition has been a lot easier, I think, because of that.
