CAP Seminar is a unique class to the school offered only to seniors who are enrolled in the Creative Arts Diploma Program. The class is taught by Creative Arts Department Chair Bill Jacob. It allows CAP Students to express their artistic ideas.
“The CAP seminar is designed for CAP seniors as a way to explore the different ways one can incorporate art and art-making into their lives,” Jacob said.
Every Wednesday morning, CAP Seminar students, like Abby Jacobs ‘25, volunteer at the Sumner School in Roslindale.
“I really like volunteering at the Sumner School, which is an elementary school in Roslindale,” Abby said. “We go on Wednesday mornings and teach there. It’s kind of like an early morning drama and art class. It’s fun and a great way to connect with the community.”
CAP Seminar also includes classes by guest artists, and participants frequently give presentations on artists they admire.
Abby also discussed the different styles of learning CAP Seminar introduces to its students.
“We get graded on different areas, such as our Instagram, our CAP journals, and the presentation that we gave and our participation in CAP Seminar,” Abby said.
Jacob explained that the CAP portfolio, a collection of a student’s work in the Creative Arts Diploma Program, will help students even after graduation.
“That portfolio has on occasion helped some students convince colleges that they are worth a second look,” Jacob said. “I hope that the Seminar gives students a good idea of how to make work for themselves and get it out to the world, which is always some help in college and beyond.”
Abby expressed her approval of the focused CAP community.
“As a senior, I like how we have a closer CAP community within the greater CAP community. We have a lot more responsibility with that.”
