Sports Roundup: Week of Jan. 4

VARSITY 1 BOYS BASKETBALL

MacDuffie 60 Brimmer 53

Brimmer went on the road to face AA opponent MacDuffie on their home court. Both teams traded punches throughout the game as it went back and forth all the way to the end. AJ Reeves ’18 was spectacular early on as he scored his teams first 10 points. Mark Gasperini ’16 played perhaps his best game of the season as he scored a team high 23 points and added a dozen rebounds. The Gators managed to contain MacDuffie’s big man, Jordy Tshiminga, who scored only 5 points and an equal number of rebounds. MacDuffie used their depth at the guard position as senior Brad Calipari drained several clutch three pointers to keep the game just out of reach for the Gators.

VARSITY 2 BOYS BASKETBALL

Gann 59 Brimmer 40

Though the Varsity 2 team led Gann 14-13 midway through the first half, the boys struggled to impose their will on the offensive and defensive glass and suffered a double-digit loss as a result. Giving the Gann shooters several opportunities to score in each possession led to points scored in the paint and from the free throw line, and eventually to an insurmountable deficit for the team. Jacob Quiles ’16 posted a double-double, once again led all scorers in the game with 23 points and adding 14 rebounds. Peng Zhang ’18 added 7 points and Michael Hastings ’18 and Richard He ’19 contributed a basket each, and Jared Heller ’19 hit a basket and a free throw with some good late game post play. Grant Iuliano ‘18 had 3 points on free throws and 8 rebounds before fouling out of the game. Dylan Rigol ’18, Steven Ramsden’19 and Zhang held Gann’s leading scorer to just 10 points, half of his season average, but the rest of the Gann team picked up the scoring slack and secured the win.

CCA  68  Brimmer 38

Plagued by a succession of turnovers to start the game and a slow start on the defensive end, the Varsity 2 team found itself down 13-2 early in the game against CCA and struggled unsuccessfully throughout the rest of the game to recover. With some effort, the team managed to secure only a 13-point halftime deficit. The game got away from the Gators in the second half when they continued to struggle to score points from a variety of players. Grant Iuliano ’18 and Jacob Quiles ’16 produced the points for the team with Iuliano hitting 6 of 9 3-point shots and ending up as the game’s leading scorer with 22 points; he added 3 blocked shots as well. Quiles hit for 12 points on the night, tying CCA’s leading point scorer, while struggling to get his shot to drop. Other contributions in the game included hard work on defense on the part of Alex Dolan ’17, Ben Ernest ’19, Jared Heller ’19, Michael Hastings ’18, Steven Ramsden ‘19 and Dylan Rigol ’18, who also contributed a memorable blocked shot in transition defense.

VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL

Gann 41 Brimmer 22

In its first home game of the new year, the Varsity girls team took on Gann Academy.  The Gators got off to a strong offensive lead in the first 10 minutes of the game led by Sophia Gomez ‘ 19 and Shani Breiman ’18.  Tenacious defense and control of the boards from Amy Nwachukwu ’18 and Naila Silmi ’18 helped keep the Gators in contention going into the second half.  Even with a strong team effort, with help from the Gator bench, Gann’s aggressive offense in the second half made it difficult to keep the Gators in contention for the win.

Landmark 44 Brimmer 25

In its second match up of the season, the Gators took on The Landmark School at home.  While Landmark took an early lead, Brimmer kept themselves in the game by ripping down defensive rebounds. In the second half, the Gators put up a valiant effort with more aggressive defense and out scoring Landmark offensively.  Despite a strong comeback, including top scoring by Sita Alomran ’19 and Shani Breiman ’18,  the Gators were unable to come up with the win, losing 44-25.
