November 5 marks the 2024 Presidential Election. Here is what you need to know about the candidates, voting, and more.
Donald Trump/JD Vance
Donald Trump is the candidate for the Republican party. His policies are outlined on his website, where he states twenty agenda items designed to “Make America Great Again.” Highlights from this policy list include “seal the border and stop migrant inflation,” “end inflation, and make America affordable again,” and “keep men out of women’s sports.” Donald Trump served as president from 2016-2020, but lost his reelection campaign in 2020 to Joe Biden.
JD Vance is currently a US senator for the State of Ohio, as well as the bestselling author of Hillbilly Elegy*, a memoir about his childhood. Vance attended University of Ohio and Yale Law School, and served in the Iraq war. Vance previously did not support President Trump, but has since changed his tune. If elected as Vice President, this will be Vance’s first time serving in the Executive Branch of Government.
Kamala Harris/Tim Walz
Kamala Harris currently serves as Vice President of the United States and is running for the Democratic Party. She stepped into her candidacy after Joe Biden abruptly dropped out of the race last July. Her platform, called “a new way forward,” Harris’s policies include “tax cuts for middle class families,” “strengthen and bring down the cost of healthcare,” and “lower energy costs and tackle the climate crisis.” Before her foray into politics, Harris worked as a prosecutor in California.
Tim Walz currently serves as Governor for the state of Minnesota. Walz has a background in teaching, making his policies focus heavily on public schools. Walz previously served on the House of Representatives representing the State of Minnesota. Walz is a former non-commissioned officer for the United States Army.
If you live in the state of Massachusetts, you have until October 26 to register to vote. Early voting is available from now until election day, which is November 5. Make your voice heard; check your registration today at vote.org.
