After an excellent season, the varsity girls’ soccer team finished with an 8-4-1 record and qualified for the IGC Playoffs as the sixth seed.
Brimmer GVS upset third-seeded Boston Trinity Academy in the quarter-finals of the IGC tournament. During the regular season, Brimmer lost to BTA 4-0. The quarter-final game was fast-paced and high-energy for the entire 80 minutes of regular time.
The Gators struck first, with a goal scored by seventh-grader Suzanna Bess. BTA tied it up in the second half to send the game into sudden-death extra time.
After a scoreless 10 minutes, the game went to Penalty Kicks. Sophia Horning, Alexa Dykeman, and Nydia Comenzo made the three penalties for Brimmer.
Sophomore Nydia Comenzo saved two out of four penalties to earn the victory. It was a massive win for the girls’ team, earning a big bounce-back win to advance to the next round.
Comenzo shared her thoughts about the game.
“My thoughts before the games were overall positive, constantly telling myself that a win for the team is most definitely in the cards for us,” said Comenzo. “I was also thinking about how to say some supportive words to my team to uplift us to face the game with full confidence and intensity to secure the win.”
Comenzo also reflected on her feelings before the shootout,
“When that final whistle blew from the overtime portion of the game, my heart sank a little due to the immense pressure that I was about to face.”
Comenzo knew that the team’s season and playoff hopes were coming down to her.
“At first, I was nervous out of my mind not knowing how I could find the confidence to face a one-on-one in the goal when Brimmer’s Playoff spot was on the line.”
Comenzo shows her faith in her teammates no matter the result of the shootout.
“I knew that no matter what the score came out to be the whole team worked so hard to get here and if I did fail, I had the team to support me.”
The Gators’ Cinderella run ended with a close 1-0 defeat at the hands of Covenant Christian Academy.
The game was intense and came down to the wire. But after CCA scored early on, the Gators felt that their season was coming to an end. After their unfortunate defeat, the team is waiting to hear if they will receive an invitation to the annual NEPSAC (New England Prep Schools Athletic Conference) tournament. Either way, the team can consider their season a success especially if they are able to continue playing.
