Michael Venturiello, founder of Christopher Street Tours, visited the School on Thursday during assembly block to speak to the Middle and Upper School on how storytelling can build empathy—an approach his LGBTQ+-owned NYC tour company uses to make queer history accessible through the people and places that paved the way.
During the keynote, Michael focused on a few key topics while speaking to an attentive Middle and Upper school joint assembly. He told reflections on identity, friendship, and the importance of protecting LGBTQ+ history.
Venturiello said that inclusive campuses like Brimmer, are crucial in keeping these stories alive.
“By telling these stories, by sharing these stories, we can bridge gaps, build connections, foster empathy, and help people understand different perspectives,” Venturiello said.
When asked how students and teachers can best support LGBTQ+ peers, Venturiello pointed to the importance of “holding space for all identities.”
He encouraged teachers and students to create environments where everyone feels safe to express themselves.
“It’s about being someone people can talk to, trust, and find comfort in,” he said. “Showing kindness and empathy might sound simple, but those are powerful, tangible ways to make others feel safe.”
Venturiello also offered encouragement for anyone questioning their identity. “Your journey is your journey,” he said. “There’s no one right way, no timeline.”

He also reflected on his past and his experience of coming out.
During the keynote, Venturiello mentioned a best friend who he first came out to, and emphasized that everyone has their own stories to tell. He explained that he once felt pressured to tell everyone right away, but later realized that authenticity looks different for everyone.
“Living your true, authentic self is a gift and a privilege,” he said. “But there’s no rush.”
Venturiello’s visit reminded the community that supporting LGBTQ+ voices isn’t just about acceptance—it’s about empathy, education, and ensuring that everyone’s story is part of our shared history.
