The Gator earned three awards today from the New England Scholastic Press Association (NESPA), capping a triumphant year for the student publication.
For the first time in newsroom history, a student, outgoing Editor-in-Chief Shani Breiman ’18, earned special recognition for an editorial, Flexibility, Understanding Needed as Clubs Bear Brunt of Growing Pains.
Also, for the first time, another staffer, Gabe Byryan ’19, earned special recognition for a column, Speak Truth to Power Amid Sexual Abuse Claims.
For the second straight year, the newsroom also earned a “Highest Achievement” rank.
Earlier this year, The Gator earned top national awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association and the National Scholastic Press Association. In the fall, NESPA also awarded Michael Donahue ’19 special localizing recognition for his article, Community Responds to DACA’s Uncertain Fate.
“I could not be an prouder of the continued success of the newsroom,” Adviser David Cutler said. “After four years, students have shown that this program has deep roots, which have established a legacy and culture of successful student journalism.”
