This summer, famed author Toni Morrison passed away. She was 88.

Throughout her nearly five decade career, Morrison wrote about parts of black, female, and American identity that had seldom been represented in popular culture before. She conveyed these ideas through what the New York Times lauded as “luminous, incantatory prose resembling that of no other writer in English.”

Her many awards for her writing include a Pulitzer Prize for her 1987 novel Beloved, and Nobel Prize in Literature, and a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Below, students and teachers reflect on Morrison and their experience reading her works.
