Song Analysis: The Walters’ ‘I Love You So’

‘I Love You So’ by The Walters is an indie and alternative song that came out in 2014. If you’re on the TikTok app, you’re probably familiar with this song. It constantly goes around TikTok, inspiring several trends. One trend focused on the lyrics “I love you so, please let me go,” and the trend involved users writing dialogue that resonates with a personal experience of yours.

I just need someone in my life to give it structure

The song’s narrator needs someone that motivates him and who is not going to stress him out.

To handle all the selfish ways I’d spend my time without her

He wants to have a positive relationship with himself, but his partner keeps bringing him down, so it is hard.

You’re everything I want, but I can’t deal with all your lovers

He is deeply in love with her, but she has had many ex-lovers, so it makes him doubt their relationship.

You’re saying I’m the one, but it’s your actions that speak louder

His being in love could have fooled him into forgetting that actions are not always more important than words.

Giving me love when you are down and ended another

In this lyric, he is saying how she only appreciates him when she is depressed

I’ve gotta get away and let you go, I’ve gotta get over.
But I love you so
I love you so
I love you so
I love you so

He wants to leave, but he loves her, so he is trying to figure out a way to get out of the relationship.

I’m gonna pack my things and leave you behind
This feeling’s old and I know that I’ve made up my mind
I hope you feel what I felt when you shattered my soul

He is leaving her, and he wants her to feel the way he felt either when he cheated on him or was just being a bad partner.

‘Cause you were cruel and I’m a fool

Here, he is saying that he fell in love with her even though she was, in his words, “cruel.”

So, please let me go
But I love you so (please let me go)

My take on these lyrics is that their relationship is very unstable, and he wants to get out of it, but he loves her so much. He is incapable of leaving since he loves her. If it were dialogue, I would see it as “I love you, so please let me go.” He is telling her that he loves her and that he wants to leave the relationship, and have her let him go in peace.

The song’s narrator has decided to end his relationship with his lover’s “selfish ways,” like cheating on him, and only appreciating him when she is in an episode of depression.
