Ariana Grande’s sixth album, Positions, was released in late October 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. It followed her highly successful albums “Sweetener” and “thank u, next.”
Critics, however, felt that the album was bland with R&B slow jams and lyrics about new romance.
The pastel-colored album cover hints towards the album’s smooth, intimate vibe. Songs in the album range from playful seduction in the song “34+35”, to self-empowerment in “Just Like Magic”, to vulnerability and self-acceptance in “POV”.
Many reviewers praised Grande’s vocals and the album’s mood. The Simmons Review wrote that Positions is “lighthearted, playful, and highly sexual,” even dubbing it a “positivity-filled banger”. The record “solidifies Grande as one of pop music’s leading voices,” thanks to cheerful R&B rhythms and catchy melodies.
Personally, I think the consistency across songs makes it easy to listen to as a whole. My favorite tracks, “Positions” and “34+35,” stand out because of their rhythm and overall energy.
However, some reviewers said Positions lacked variety. Baylor Lariat summarized the album as, “a little disappointing,” saying many songs “sound virtually the same.” I think they have a point, but the album’s simplicity makes it more personal and focused. Its overall tone feels in sync for where Ariana Grande was in her career.
Overall, Positions is an emotional album that shows Ariana Grande’s strong vocals and skill in R&B and pop. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 and appeared on several year-end lists.
It’s a great album with smooth production and honest themes. My favorite songs, “Positions” and “34+35,” contain the confident and relaxed mood that makes the album enjoyable. Though the album may not top her career peak, Positions stands strong as an enjoyable listen.
