In a tough playoff match yesterday between the girls’ varsity soccer and Boston Trinity Academy, the game came down to the wire—and a questionable call decided the fate of the 2-1 Gator loss.
Down by one late in the game, Hadley Reardon ’27 had a corner kick in hopes of scoring and tying the match up at two apiece.
Reardon’s kick made a miraculous bounce into the goal, scoring for the Gators in the clutch to tie the game at two apiece. Despite the shot, the referees ruled that the ball had traveled out of bounds before it reached the net, making the goal not count and BTA maintain their lead.
This major call up the stretch of the game was the dagger to the Gators’ hopes of a first-round playoff win. The Gators are now eliminated from further playoff contention.
Displays like this, where controversial officiating determines the outcome of an important match, are beyond disappointing. The Gators had been on a three-game win streak before this match, so a loss in this fashion is a tough blow in the first round of the playoffs.
The Gators finish their season at 6-5-3.
