Despite only having 10 players on the roster this season in a game that fields 12, the Varsity Girls Lacrosse team refused to let their numbers define them. Through teamwork, determination, and leadership, the team finished with an impressive 6-3 record.
With such a small lineup, every player was required to stay on the field for nearly the entire game, leaving little room for breaks or substitution.
While many other teams in the league rely on large benches for rests and rotations, this school’s team had no choice but to depend on each other and push through exhaustion every game.
“Winning wise this was one of our best seasons. Everyone really came together and was able to fight each game as a true team, which I think made it so positive even with only 10 players,” Ali Shimomura ’27 said.
The season wasn’t only successful in term of wins and losses but also the in relationships built between peers from all ages, spanning from middle schoolers all the way to juniors.
Because of the small roster, every player had an important role on the field and was forced to communicate constantly during games and practices.
The team’s younger players, especially the middle schoolers and freshman, stepped up in huge ways throughout the season competing against older and more experienced players on the field.
Despite being some of the younger athletes on the field, they showed confidence, toughness and maturity beyond their age while helping the team stay competitive in every game.
Their energy and determination became a huge part of the team’s success throughout the season.
“Having 10 players on the roster had its upsets but one positive is that it made us closer as a team, which made playing the game so much more fun. We did really good for the amount of players at the end of the season,” Lila Saghbini ’29 said.
