Improving from previous years, Varsity Ultimate Frisbee finished the season with a 4-2-1 record. In their last game, they won 15-3 against Gann Academy. According to players, the team improved in a number of aspects, and had a resilient mindset.
Team Captain Sebastian Velastegui ‘26 provided some crucial insight about the season prior to the final few games.
“I think we’ve done a good job as a team on improving our skills, and I’m happy in the direction that we’re going, but we need to step up some of our game, iron out some of the more basic stuff, because we’re making mistakes we shouldn’t make in games under the pressure.”
Velastegui also highlighted how the team needed to be more vocal on the field.
“As of now, our team needs to work on a couple things. First of all is team communication. We’re not great at that. Paying attention and being aware on the field is important,” Velastegui said.
Ultimate Frisbee has made many improvements, a lot of these stem from Velastegui’s suggestions for the team. They ended the season with four wins in a row, and this year has been one of the most productive to date.
Despite his belief that the team could have improved in some areas, Velastegui emphasized places where the team was flourishing, such as significant defensive improvements.
“Specifically, our on-disc defense has gotten better for some of our players by a lot,” Velastegui said. “That’s really great. On-disc defense translates to turnovers, which translates to great offense.”
Velastegui also cited growth in throwing ability as a major reason for their late-season success.
“We’ve had a better throwing core. Our throwers have gotten better. That’s always important,” Velastegui said. And we just have a great athletic young team that we’re hoping to continue on.”
This showed in their games, as they consistently outscored their opponents, and had strong defense. Everything seems to be clicking for the Gators, and they have the mentality to keep going and push further for next season.
This record was the best in their team’s history. Varsity Ultimate Frisbee team had a winning season, and has high hopes for next year.
