For the second year in a row, The Gator earned First Place for News Site (Class III, schools with 750 or fewer students) from the New England Scholastic Press Association.
“I couldn’t be prouder of this remarkable group of student journalists,” adviser David Cutler said. “This achievement reflects both the quality of their work and the strength of a Brimmer and May education.”
Cutler stressed that the accolades represent more than The Gator and its team; they highlight the School’s wider culture of education and learning. He added that despite the School’s small size, no other independent New England school has achieved comparable local and national recognition over the past decade.
“While the editors might be the ones on the plaque, none of this could have been accomplished without the amazing writers who keep the newsroom going,” Editor-in-Chief Rachael Rosenberg ’27 said. “We are so lucky to work with such a talented group, and the future of our newsroom looks bright.”
NESPA also honored Head of School Judith Guild with its coveted “Freedom to Write Award” in recognition of her exemplary leadership in protecting student press freedom.
By recently signing the Private School Journalism Association’s Affirmation Statement—the first action of its kind by a head of school in New England and one of the first by a private school leader nationally—she extended to Gator students the same First Amendment protections and editorial independence afforded to student journalists at Massachusetts public schools.
The newsroom also received recognition in design, photography, and journalism. Its home page earned First Place in Design, honoring the Editorial Board’s work in creating a strong and engaging digital presentation.
Charlie Young ’29 received awards in photography, including Fourth Place in Sports Action for V. 1 and an Honorable Mention in Photo Gallery for Radium Girls.
Edward Flint ’26 and Rachael Rosenberg ’27 also earned Third Place co-winner in Editorial for Head of School Signs Press Freedom Affirmation Statement; Tavio Mares-Van Praag ’27 earned Third Place co-winner in Personality Profile for Mr. Szwartz Goes to Hollywood; and Mary Wang ’26 and Rohan Muni ’28 each received Honorable Mention in News Story for Carney, Sandoe & Associates Begins Head of School Search and BREAKING: Beneath the Missiles, Voices from the Middle East.
Mares-Van Praag and Wang also earned recognition as All–New England Journalists, placing them among the region’s top student reporters.
“People often congratulate me as the adviser and the students on staff, but this isn’t just about the newsroom,” Cutler said. “It’s about an exceptionally talented faculty and staff, along with an incredibly supportive administration that honors student voice and teaches critical thinking and ethical leadership. I often say you can best judge a school by the quality of its student newspaper.”
