Week of 10/3/16

V. Boys’ Soccer
BM 0 WARING 1

The team lost a close game at Waring, 1:0. The Gators felt stiff after spending over two hours on the bus in heavy traffic. The Gators also had only 10 minutes to warm up, before playing two 35-minute halves. The squad started had the upper hand for the first ten minutes, but Waring, an organized team, passed the ball with precision well.

The game was very evenly matched, with both teams making opportunities to score. It wasn’t until the final ten minutes that the deadlock broke. Waring scored the only goal of the game, on a defensive miscue from the Gators.

Still, Brimmer played the final ten minutes with urgency and dominated the game, but the team couldn’t quite find the equalizer, ending the Gators’ win streak ended at five games.

V. Boys’ Soccer               
BM 3 WARING 2

In a back and forth game filled with great plays, hustle, and clutch performances, the Gators overcame an excellent team from Waring School Friday evening, 3:2.

Waring came out of the gates fast, earning several corner kicks in the opening minutes. They were able to break through as a Waring player beat her defender to hit a shot at the far post, beating keeper Alexis Ifill ’17 for a 1:0 lead.

The Waring defense worked hard to shut down the Brimmer attack after that goal.

In the second half, Waring shut down the Brimmer attack, but the Gators maintained possession in the offensive zone. Several shots from Sophie Lapat ’18, Shani Breiman ’18, and Kimberly Santos ’18 went wide or were saved by the goalie.

Finally, Breiman picked up a loose ball, turned by her defender, and hit a low shot by the keeper to tie the score. Waring then scored off of a deflection, shooting the ball into the far corner for a 2:1 lead. Less than 5 minutes later, Lapat shot the ball from 25-yards out and equalized the game at 2 a piece.

With two minutes to go, Hannah Ahearn ’20 was fouled 30-yards from goal. Breiman, noticing the Waring goalie standing far off her line, hit a rocket into the far left corner for the win.

Week of 10/10/16

V. Girls’ Soccer
BM 6 Gann 0

The Gators were back in action after the long weekend, traveling to Gann Academy on Thursday afternoon. Midway through the half, Shani Breiman ’18 slid a pass through to Sophie Lapat ’18, who beat the keeper with a nice shot to the corner.

Breiman and Lapat connected again a few minutes later, as Lapat scored her second goal of the game. The first half finished with Brimmer leading 2:0.

Midfield, led by Hannah Ahearn ’20, Caiti Cullen ’19, and Abby Mynahan ’19, did a great job of keeping possession, but the Gators could not find the final pass that would lead to a goal-scoring opportunity. Finally, Breiman took a pass and dribbled to the end line where she crossed it to Lapat, who calmly slotted it home for a hat-trick.

Kimberly Santos ’18 then got on the board when she blasted a loose ball off a defender and into the goal for a 4:0 lead. Breiman earned another goal when she ran onto a great through ball from Cullen, finishing with a low shot to the left corner.

Breiman finished the scoring with her second goal, and the Gators won 6:0.

Emma Hastings ’20 also played a great game off the bench, as she almost scored several times and made some great passes. Samantha Vingers ’17 returned from injury and played well at outside back.

V. Boys’ Soccer
BM 2 Gann 1

The team beat league leaders Gann Academy at Orr Field, 2:1. The Gators came out hungry for victory and dominated the early portion of the game. They took the lead within five minutes, when Henry Ngo ’19 volleyed home a shot from a bouncing cross by Olivier Khorasani ’20.

As the half progressed, Gann worked its way into the game by creating a number of scoring opportunities, but keeper Liam Johansson ’17 kept the ball from the back of the net. In the second half, the Gators again started out the better of the two sides. The Gators earned another goal after Tyler Best ’18 made a great run from out on the left and slotted the ball past the onrushing Gann keeper.

Unfortunately, the Gators barely finished celebrating when Gann scored their lone goal of the game. Their goal gave them a lifeline, and they battled hard for an equalizer. But the Gators were stout on defense and the game ended in the Gators’ favor.

Cross Country

Varsity Cross Country earned an impressive first place win on Wednesday at the MBIL meet, hosted by the Cambridge School of Weston. In a league of six area schools, Brimmer had four remarkably strong performances: Conner Reif ’19, Charles Li ’17, Lachlan Davidson ’17, and Liam Conklin ’19. All placed in the top-ten of a field of 84 runners. Jeff Wu finished in 24th place, while shaving a minute off his previous time. Other runners showing improvement were Richard O’Keefe ’20, Saul Hodin ’22 and Oliver Wen ’19. Both Saul and Oliver shaved a full three minutes from their course times. A separate girls race took place with a smaller field of runners. Kaitlyn Anderson ’20, Olivia Griffin ’18 and Sophia Spring ’22 had solid performances. The Varsity team is excited about its win in Weston. The team shows great promise as it looks ahead to the league championships in early November.

JV. Girls’ Soccer
BM 2 Beaver 3

The team came up one goal short in a hard fought match against Beaver. Angeline Nur Dervisevic ’21 returned from the injured list to play goal in a strong performance with several excellent saves. Unfortunately, Beaver capitalized on its penalty kick opportunities, scoring on two of three shots. However, the Gator offense worked hard to even the score with well executed goals.  Elo Luczkow ’22 who connected with a beautifully timed cross from Caroline Champa ’20, scored the first Brimmer goal. Champa scored another goal by tapping in a well placed throw-in from Kaylee Little ’22. The Gators maintained their offensive pressure but were unable to find the net a third time by the time the final whistle blew.

MS. Boys’ Soccer
BM 7 Beaver 1

The Gators earned its first win of the season, beating Beaver 7:1. Sep van Dam ’23 started off the scoring early with a great run to goal and beating the keeper one-on-one. Beaver equalized shortly after, but Sep was unstoppable in front of net, putting away two more goals. Noanddi Manigat ’22 scored the fifth Gator goal with a powerful shot from distance before halftime. The goals continued in the second half, with Neel Kumar ’22 finishing a well placed corner kick. The final goal was scored by Timmy Apostolica ’23 after beating the defense with his speed down the wing.  The Gators showed great aggressive play defensively in the second half, only allowing Beaver to get two shots on goal.
