One of the biggest offseason moves of all time was when the Green Bay Packers traded quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets. In 2022, a strong Jets roster was kept from being more competitive because of Zach Wilson's historically bad quarterback play. A bonafide Hall of Famer, Rodgers was supposed to be the Jets' savior. However, Rodgers tore his left Achilles tendon less than four minutes into his Jets debut. Days later, Rodgers underwent a "speed bridge" surgery for an expedited recovery. Rodgers tried to make a miraculous recovery at the end of the season, but poor backup quarterback play ruined the Jets playoff hopes and made it meaningless for Rodgers to return.
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson had an electrifying start to his NFL career, as he recorded four rushing touchdowns in his four games played. Though, Richardson's exciting start was contrasted with multiple injuries. Richardson left at the end of his first game with ankle and knee soreness, suffered a concussion in Week Two, and then endured a Grade Three AC joint sprain in Week Five which sidelined him for the rest of the season. He underwent shoulder surgery shortly after. The Colts were rewarded for investing in backup quarterback, Gardner Minshew, as he led the team to a 7-6 record after Richardson's injury.
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins has been a rising quarterback for several years. However, in 2023, Cousins took his game to a different level. Through eight weeks, Cousins put together an MVP-caliber campaign to start the season. Stats show that after Week Nine, he was top six in the league in passing yards, passing touchdowns, and passer rating. Unfortunately, Cousins's campaign was cut short in Week Eight when he tore his Achilles tendon and needed surgery. The Vikings traded for Joshua Dobbs and rotated through three different quarterbacks in an effort to replace Cousins. The Vikings saw promising play from each replacement, though each ended up getting benched.
New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones's upgrade in play during the 2022 season landed him a massive four-year, $160 million contract last offseason. Accordingly, Giants fans had high hopes heading into the 2023 season. Unfortunately, Jones took a massive step back in play this season, with only three total touchdowns. Jones's season was also marred with injury as he missed time with a neck strain in Week Five and tore his ACL in Week Nine. The Giants backup Tommy DeVito initially excelled in Jones's absence, but was ultimately replaced for Tyrod Taylor who was unable to recover the Giant's already lost season.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson played only six games over the last two seasons due to concerning allegations off the field. Watson's rusty end to last season raised many questions about his future in the NFL. However, with the Browns financially tied to Watson on a fully-guaranteed contract, they were forced to continue with him as their starter in 2023. Watson's game hasn't returned to his previous form as he has yet to throw for 300 passing yards in a game with the Browns. In 2023, a high ankle sprain and fractured shoulder kept Watson on the bench. After Watson was ruled out for the season, the Browns signed former Super Bowl winning quarterback Joe Flacco. Flacco played fantastically for the Browns, leading the team to the playoffs and winning AP Comeback Player of The Year.
Throughout his young career, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow ascended into one of the league's premier superstars. Burrow made it to the AFC Championship Game or Super Bowl in the last two seasons. Though, injuries have kept Burrow from becoming even more dominant, as half his seasons have been shortened by season-ending blows. A big reason for this is the Bengals poor offensive line play. Burrow has been sacked the 6th most all-time in a quarterbacks first 50 starts. This season, Burrow was forced to rehab once again with lingering calf and finger injuries and tore a ligament in his throwing wrist in Week Eleven. The Bengals had a slow start but were heating up when Burrow got injured. Jake Browning replaced the injured star, and while promising, he was unable to replicate Burrow's magic.
Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is sensational. In fact, he is one of nine quarterbacks in NFL history to surpass 5,000 passing yards in a season. This season was a down year for the Chargers, who had a 5-8 record under Herbert's command. Even still, with Herbert, the Chargers were not eliminated from the playoffs. But in Week Fourteen, Herbert fractured his index finger, decimating the Chargers' playoff hopes. Easton Stick took over, only managing to throw a touchdown in one game, and the Chargers finished the year with four consecutive losses in the absence of their star.
