Finals may be approaching fast, but so is one of the Upper School’s most anticipated pick-me-ups: DeStress Fest, the Student Senate–led event that turns a tense week into a chance to reset.
Upper School Student Life Coordinator Tess Cicala explained that the goal of DeStress Fest is to support students during a stressful time.
“The goal of DeStress Fest is to just help everybody unwind and relax,” Cicala said. “I think it’s a nice moment for everyone to come together and get stress out before a big week of exams.”
At its core, DeStress Fest is about giving students space to breathe. The event is open to all Upper School students, and features a variety of activities designed to ease stress and encourage rest.
One of the most popular attractions each year is the stuff-your-own-plushie station. This year, students can choose between an elephant and a teddy bear. In addition, the event will offer candy, fidget toys, stickers, and pencils for students to fill their own goodie bags.
Student Senate President Mary Wang ’26, who helps organize the event with the Upper School leadership team, described the planning process behind DeStress Fest.

“We plan events like this during Senate meetings, and we begin brainstorming around late November,” Wang said. “I like to review our plans for previous events and take ideas from there that we know went well. Senate members also contribute lots of ideas and help us decide which stuffed animals to pick.”
The Upper School Senate works closely with Cicala to make the event successful each year and has helped organize DeStress Fest for the past three years.
“Senate has really helped the past couple of years, which has been great,” Cicala said. “They put a lot of work into it. They mostly find the materials and treats they want to have for the day, and they’re the ones who manage the tables.”
DeStress Fest remains a tradition that helps students to interact, bond, and relax, before they enter their exam rooms.
Editor’s Note: DeStress Fest will happen on December 15 starting from 11 a.m. in the Wright Conference Room. Mary Wang ’26 also serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Gator.
