Varsity II boys basketball opened postseason play Tuesday with a 51–30 win over Commonwealth, advancing to the semifinals and setting up a road matchup against Boston University Academy today.
The team reached the postseason for the first time in two years after finishing the regular season with a 6–5 record, capping a season marked by steady improvement, resilience and growing chemistry.
The matchup brings familiarity. Earlier this season, the Gators edged BUA in a close contest, a result that has fueled confidence heading into the rematch.
Monte Turner ’27, who has played a key role throughout the season, said the team trusts its preparation.
“BUA has some good players, but I feel like we’re the better team,” Turner said. “We have better chemistry, and that’s something we’ve been building all season.”
The Gators are led by second-year coach Givaughn Jones, who has guided the team into the MBIL II title race.
“Coach Jones definitely adds to the intensity and chemistry we need to pull out wins,” Turner said. “He’s a really, really good coach.”
Alongside Jones, the team relies on a strong senior core, including captains Quinn Teschke ’26, Demetrius Quarles ’26 and Adrian Mathiesen ’26. Turner credited the seniors for setting the tone this season.
“Our seniors have really stepped it up,” Turner said. “They add to the chemistry we’ve already been building, and it’s even better this year.”
With an energetic head coach, veteran leadership and contributions from younger players, the Gators have already produced a season to remember. Still, Turner believes success hinges on trust and effort.
“Trusting each other and playing hard… [creates] points for us,” Turner said. “If we bring that into these next two games, I think we’ll be finalists by Thursday.”
Editors’ note: The Gators tip off at 3:45 p.m. today at Boston University Academy.
