Varsity Curling closed its season with an impressive performance, capturing its fourth consecutive championship.
The championship bonspiel took place Feb. 26 at 3:30 p.m. at the Country Club in Brookline. The Gators claimed two bonspiel trophies in competition against the British International School of Boston and the Winsor School.
“They just work really well together,” Coach Paul Murray said. “They’re really respectful. They really practice their strategy, they practice their throwing. They just know it’s nice to watch them come together as an overall in each individual team. Every year we see tremendous amounts of improvement.”
A few hours before the high stakes’ championships, Sydney Dykeman ’27 expressed her appreciation for this year’s team.
“I think that the seniors took on the roles of being captains really well, and everyone else kind of just like, participates,” Dykeman said.
The hard work and leadership shown throughout the season allowed Brimmer to extend its champion streak throughout the years.
After the bonspiel, Leo Latino ’28 reflected on the team’s growth throughout the season, pointing to both its strengths and areas for improvement.
“I think we did a great job getting ahead and building a strong lead,” Latino said. “In the future, we need to focus on execution and consistency.”
Despite facing various challenges that affected the team’s morale, their positivity allowed them to navigate through those challenges and triumph in the end through sheer will. Paloma Hassan ’27 reflects on how the mindset of the team led to a positive outcome.
“I would say the way we handled adversary is we kept a very positive mindset,” Hassan said. “And we supported our teammates no matter what, like, even if the challenges come and we’re negative, we would just keep on trying out hardest.”
Sebastian Velastegui ’26, one of the seniors on the team, reflects on his joy with being one of the leaders on the team and future hopes.
“Part of that’s like teaching some of the newer curlers some basic strategies, how to be more effective and aim better in a game,” Velastegui said. “And I really enjoy that.”
The Gators will lose some key senior players next year but will remain a strong team as improvements in different areas keep continuing.
“I hope that some of the people that I’ve taught will help take up some of that mantle of teaching newer and younger curlers.” Velastegui said.
The team achieved victories in both the novice and advanced brackets, winning two trophies. They also beat the Winsor School and the British International School of Boston in the bonspiel.
With a strong returning core and promising new talent, the Gators aim to extend their championship streak in the coming seasons.
