In the PSJA/Quill and Scroll Journalist Portfolio Contest, The Gator delivered the strongest showing in its history, with honors announced earlier today in Minneapolis at the National High School Journalism Convention.
Senior journalist Rohan Muni ’28 won Opinion Writer of the Year. Sports Editor Gabe Cohen ’26 won Sports Writer of the Year. Editor-in-Chief Mary Wang ’26 placed third in News Writer of the Year.
Cohen also received an honorable mention for sports writing in a separate Quill and Scroll contest.
“These are major individual awards that are so well deserved, and they speak volumes about the kind of skills that students hone in the newsroom here,” adviser David Cutler said. “At the same time, I also want to share that the accolades, while honoring individuals, also speak to the team effort and teamwork of the students involved in The Gator.”
The Private School Journalism Association, which serves private and independent school student media programs, partners with Quill and Scroll, the International Honor Society for High School Journalists, to run the Journalist Portfolio Contest.
“Words cannot explain how grateful I am to be recognized for the work I have done at The Gator,” Cohen said. “I have so much gratitude for all of the people who have helped me grow as a writer over the past few years, and everyone in the newsroom who makes this ship sail.”
That competition recognizes the top portfolios produced by independent school student journalists nationwide. Rather than rewarding a single entry, it honors sustained excellence across a body of work. With two first-place winners and a top-three finish in news writing, the performance marked a new high point for The Gator.
Editors’ note: The spring awards season continues May 1, when The Gator travels to Boston University for the New England Scholastic Press Association awards, where individual honors and All-New England selections will be announced.
