Inside the Premier League: Race for First Place

Week 32 featured four exciting match-ups from the top of the table, as well as a crucial relegation match between Norwich and Newcastle to determine which team may be sent to the Football League Championship.

Arsenal 4:0 Watford

On Saturday, Arsenal crushed Watford in a 4:0 victory. Alexis Sanchez scored the first goal in the 4th minute, scoring from a left footed shot inside the box. In the 37th minute, Alex Iwobi received a pass from Alexis Sanchez and placed the ball just out of reach of the goalie. The third goal occurred three minutes into the second half, when Hector Bellerin shot the ball down the center of the goal line under the keeper’s reach. To end the match, Theo Walcott tapped the ball into the bottom left corner of the net off of a pass from Joel Campbell. This was an important win for Arsenal, as it secured their spot in third place of the league—four points above Manchester City.

Manchester City 4:0 Bournemouth

Also on Saturday, Manchester City beat Bournemouth 4:0. The first goal occurred in the 6th minute with Fernando Reges settling a deflection off of a corner kick and shooting it into the top of the goal. Shortly after in the 11th minute, Kevin De Bruyne shot the ball into the bottom left corner of the net off of a pass from David Silva. In the 18th minute, to secure the lead for Manchester City, Sergio Aguero headed the ball into the bottom left corner off of a cross from Jesus Navas. In the last minute of extra time, Aleksander Kolarov shot the ball into the top right corner of the net off of a pass from Samir Nasri to end with a four goal lead.

Tottenham Hotspur 1:1 Liverpool

The last game on Saturday ended in a 1:1 tie between Liverpool and second-place Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs needed a win in order to compete with first place Leicester City. In this exciting match, the first half ended 0-0, with both teams fighting hard for the win. In the 50th minute, Philippe Coutinho scored the first goal of the match off of a pass from Daniel Sturridge. Coutinho received the ball in the center of the box and knocked the ball into the bottom right corner of the net. In the 62nd minute, Tottenham equalised with a goal from Harry Kane, who received a pass from Christian Eriksen and placed the ball into the bottom right corner of the net. A draw in this game put Spurs 7 points behind first place Leicester city, making it very difficult for Tottenham to win the league.

Leicester City 1:0 Southampton

On Sunday, Leicester City beat Southampton 1:0, and secured their first-place spot in the league. The goal occurred in the 37th minute with a header from Wes Morgan into the bottom left corner of the net. This occurred off of a set piece with a cross from Christian Fuchs.

Norwich City 3:2 Newcastle

Also on Saturday, a relegation match occurred between Norwich and Newcastle with both team fighting to stay in the Premier League for another season. The first goal of the match happened in the last second of the first half, with Timm Klose heading the ball into the bottom left corner off of a cross from Robbie Brady to get Norwich on the scoreboard first. In the 71th minute, Aleksandar Mitrovic scored with a header into the top left corner of the net off of a cross from Andros Townsend to tie the game up for Newcastle. Two minutes later, Norwich responded with a goal from Dieumerci Mbokani with a right footed shot into the top center of the goal of of a pass from Jonny Howson. In the 86th minute, Gary O’Neil received a penalty for a hand ball inside the penalty area. Aleksander Mitrovic then ties up the game with a shot into the bottom right corner. With just two minutes left of extra time, Martin Olsson shoots the ball into the bottom right corner off of a pass from Jonny Howson to win the game for Norwich.
