The Varsity Girls’ basketball team is on a roll.

Third in NEPSAC’s Independent Girls League, with solid chemistry the Gators are expected to go far this season.

“Being part of the team is like being part of a family, however when it comes down to it the team needs to work on rebounding skills and defense,” says shooting guard Sita Alomran ’19. “Once we improve these aspects, I am confident we can beat any opponent in our league.”

The team has welcomed a number of new additions this season, including eighth-grader Angeline Nur Dervisevic ’21, Claire Masterson ‘20, Brianna Durand ‘20, and Hannah Ahern ‘20. With young talent, the Gators are poised to offer stiff competition well into the future.

“At first, it was hard being the only eighth grader on the team because with people I have not interacted with before,” says Nur Dervisevic. “Now, it feels like I have always played with the team.”

Two weeks ago, after a devastating one point loss to Montrose, the team regrouped and bounced back, winning their next game against the Cambridge School of Weston 44-20.

“Our team constantly shows resilience,” says Captain Shani Breiman ’18, who has dominated the league with her ability to drive to the basket and hit mid-range jump shots. “We do not let one loss define us.” In fact, the Gators almost defeated Gann, the top team in the league, in a rematch last Friday.

Unfortunately, Breiman suffered an ankle sprain, placing her on the bench for the remainder of the season.

Recently, the Gators defeated Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall Wednesday.
